Over 100 competitors and well over 200 spectators were out at the Goat Farm, on the outskirts of Perth for the first round of the Peel Districts Mountain Bike Club WA State Downhill Series which went off in style! Goat Farm is a short sharp downhill track with some flat blown out corners, plenty of flow and some good rock gardens thrown in for good measure!
In 2014 Peel has brought in live timing, where riders were able to see their time displayed on a screen within seconds of passing the finish line. This made for some tense moments and excitement down at the bottom for each category. The live timing also meant the format was the same as World Cups – qualifying was used to seed the riders in each category so that the fastest went down last, hoping to sit in the hot seat. After racing was done the top 30 riders were then sent back up the hill to do one more run for the benefit of the spectators as well as bragging rights! …View More
Us westerners have been teased by stories of Gravity Enduro events in the East for a while now, so finally on the 23rd of March it was time at last for our first Gravity Enduro event, run by Steve Jainec and Phil Wilson of WA Gravity Enduro. After a few years helping out as trail builders and committee members for the state body WAMBA, these guys decided to branch out and focus on the area they were most passionate about: gravity enduro. Held at the Goatfarm MTB Park, and consisted of four timed stages each with a very distinct character that took in the wide variety of trails at the Goatfarm. While the race was made possible by the support of CRC, it was good to see a number of local bike shops including Kalamunda Cycles, Wembley Cycles and Jet Cycles in attendance showcasing their wares and having a crack at racing. …View More
Cloudy skies and strong winds greeted riders as they arrived at the Goatfarm Mountain Bike Park for Saturday practice of the WA Downhill State Championships. For the final race of the season, PDMBC created a fun and flowy, but physically demanding, course that linked together several existing tracks on the hill. Alternating between sculpted berms, big jumps, fast flat pedal sections, and even a section of the 4X track, the course utilised much of what the relatively small hill has to offer, albeit lacking in any really steep and technical sections. Saturday practice was a challenge to the riders, with the soft but slippery dirt riding slowly after the rain, working together with strong winds to make clearing the jumps difficult. A couple of riders tried switching between their downhill rigs and shorter travel AM bikes, in an attempt to carry more speed on the jumps and flat pedally sections.
Sunday, race day. The weather took a turn for the good and the wind died down. The track had bedded in and was running much faster than before; everyone was enjoying the jumps and throwing whips for the crowd. There was a good turnout of 110 riders on the hill, and combined with the joint XC state championships, made for a large crowd gathering at the last few jumps. State champs is always an event to see both new and old faces, including Ben Bell, the defending state champion making his only race appearance this year. …View More
After a few years absence, Golden Grove Orchard returned to the Western Australian DH race calendar as the site of state round #4. With steep open grass sections and plenty of rocks, the track at Golden Grove is very different to the technical pine forest tracks WA riders are used to. A good showing from volunteer track builders in the weeks leading up to the event had the track in great condition. It began in natural bush at the top of the hill with a few dusty blown out corners and a rock garden, before heading through fast sweeping grassy turns and a few drops in the middle section, then shooting through a fast rock section out into the open, off a drop and into a steep fast grass paddock with two ski jumps. …View More
