ALL OR NOTHING // SUN BRIGHT NATIONALS

Dean Lucas rode clean and smooth to the win in U19's

Everyone knew at the beginning of the weekend that despite how fun the downhill course is, it would be a completely different beast to tame at race speed.  The day started out with some slow paced shuttles … an average turn around of an hour kept spectators and media folk and obviously riders deprived. Fingers pointed at you Cycling Australia.
Racing came round fast enough, and the majority of spectators lined the steep as Mt Everest middle wooded section were primed for a heckle. Chainsaws (minus the saws) were let fly and plenty of groms had walked the hill with bells, horns and more, everyone was ready. …View More

DUST IN THE LUNGS // SAT BRIGHT NATIONALS

Micheal Crosbie mixed it up with the elite field charging ahead for a easy U23's win

Rough days… It has been unanimous, the trails at Bright are amazing! With barely a single foul word offered from any athlete across the board in either the XCO or the DH. Steep and technical on the downhill side yet flowy and fun for the cross country riders, this sunny Victorian mountain town just agrees with you.
After everyone got a bit of practice under the belt on Friday it was time to kick off the festivities today. Sharp and early the womens XCO got underway with Bec Henderson fresh off the plane (almost) taking a early lead and maintaining it . The course was a large loop with absolutely no doubling back on itself, consisting primarily of one large up and one large down. Epic!
Jenni King mounted a courageous chase, even looking to shut down the gap in the middle laps of the race but it was not to be, eventually finishing a minute plus down on the seasoned young gun, Henderson. Tori Thomas, Kath O’Shea and Melissa Ansett were strung out behind, equally looking as fast on the descent it was easy to see that the race had been one and lost in the climb.
In U19′s Emily Parkes rode strong to take her first win of the series from Holly Harris, who later stated it just wasn’t her day. … View More and Gallery

NATIONALS RD 2 THREDBO / MEGA GALLERY

The Elite mens field full tilt in the opening moments of the race Chris Jongewaard leads

Full speed ahead the second round of the Nationals was on the weekend at Thredbo and it was pretty much all or nothing. A shorter series means a tougher points chase and riders were willing to throw their bodies on the line to claim them. The XCO course that had been planned out had Cross Country riders cursing, cramping and more on Saturday. It was a especially hard layout with a generous amount off camber climbing a continuous rock garden for a section of the descent and only a smaller break neck high speed descent to catch their breathes. Casualties along with mechanicals were frequent. In the Womens a returning Bec Henderson took the win from Peta Mullens and Jenni King whilst a, it would seem, in form Chris Jongewaard powered his way once more for the mens win in front of Jack Haig and Mark Tupalski. U23′s was a white wash or Pink wash with Michael Crosbie stamping his authority over Cameron Ivory and last rounds winner Brendan Johnston. In the U19′s there was a shakeup with Chris Hamilton taking the win over …View More & Gallery

THREDBO NAT’S RD 2 THREDBO

Mere weeks after Buller it was already time for round two at Thredbo, the racing was tough hard and fast on the world class track that is Buller. Filthy braking holes, dust and all round steezy style were highlights of the weekend particularly the junior or now ex juniors “goon” antics. On another note I think this is the most fun us media kids have had in some time. Bring on CHAMPS!!

HECKLERS, SNAKES & RACING – BULLER NATS FINAL DAY

Sam Hill almost full tucked passes a heckling cheering crowd for the win in elite men and his first aboard the Nukeproof

The final day, race day. In a almost mirror image of the racing the day before, Chris Jongewaard took out the Mens Point to Point. Jack Haig led for most of the race until the pass was made just before the descent from Cornhill from there the gap was made for the win. Andy Blair pulled in for third doing one better for the weekend. Peta Mullens again showed why she is the one to beat at the moment putting a minute into Jenni King in second, will the dominance King showed last year return?
Of course the highlight of the day for many was the Downhill. Sam Hill looked to have it in the bag but with a ever changing course mistakes were frequent and it was hard to judge who would take it. In U17′s Andy Crimmins collided with a tree pushing him into second, Max Warshawsky took control of the situation riding into the win. …View More and Gallery

LOST IN A HAZE – BULLER NATS DAY 2

Michael Illiing smashes a berm during racing on gang gangs

Smoke haze filled the sky this morning which made the dusty trails that little bit more unbearable. The main even for the day was the XCO with the women’s racing kicking off in the glowing morning light. The race was tight to begin with but soon faded when Jenni King got a flat, kicking on Peta Mullens and Nathalie Schneitter battled it out before Peta made the gap and continued to let it stick till the end. Holly Harris led an impressive charge in U19′s to hold and retain a gap on Emily Parkes.

By midday the heat had well and truly set in and I think Andy Blair put it best when he explained ” the dirt has the consistency of coco powder and when you sweat it turns to chocolate”, a little creepy but accurate. Chris Jongewaard led from the outset pushing a time gap of two minutes by lap three. Jack Haig made a heroic stand pushing to retain second whilst teammates Shaun Lewis and Andy Blair pushed together to retain third and fourth. …View More and gallery
