THE MONT 2013

Brad Morton slays a upper corner of the course

The Mont 24hr, a classic of the Australian mountainbike calendar and one of the years biggest and most anticipated races is over for yet another year with a smashing 600 teams and 3000 + riders (Just quietly that’s one hell of a lot of mountainbikers, I mean even knowing of friends in the race I didn’t see nearly any of them). Spread over the ridge line of one big paddock facing the vastness of Kowen Forest, its almost impossible to show the magnitude of riders visually.
Within the tall trees reside some of the flowiest trails in the southern hemisphere, craftily built by the Kowalski brothers and by friday evening three quarters of the regos were in, practice laps were underway and the place was already looking a little packed.
Rawhide roller racing took up the chill tent as things rolled over into night and the food kiosks were dealing out much food and beer. With most of the field entered everything was well on the way to rock and roll saturday morning, so after a few beverages to numb the nerves and hit the hay. …View More & Gallery

THE KOWALSKI CLASSIC

Driving down the afternoon of the day before things were looking quite grim as high winds, rain and sleet bracketed the brief pockets of sun. The forecast for race day was positive, yet with Canberra weather you never know which way it will turn. Sunday morning, six am the pre dawn chill lingers and the Kowalski Classic Event centre sits under a pristine sky blue dome barely a cloud in sight. A big cow motif adorns a gigantic blow up arch and tents line the start corridor. Registration is reasonably busy but the thing that is drawing everyones attention are the two trail maps just next door. Up until now no one has seen the final loops only glimpses and there is some intense study being done.
Coming from the organisers that bring you the Mont 24hr the Kowalski was billed as a chance to sample both the almost infinite trails in Kowen and Sparrow pine forests which are known for their more than ample singletrack. Suffice to say there was plenty to live up to here and it did. …Read More

A DAY WITH DAVID MCMILLAN – PICTORIAL

Talking briefly to Dave he mentioned he would like to go out and get some pictures one day and as I was already headed to Canberra that particular weekend I though I would take him up on the offer. After all Dave has a amazing natural style, not to mention he is one of the nicest guys in downhill. Dave is currently fully focused on training for Worlds, (for which he leaves this Saturday), so we were able to tee up the Monday for a epic day of riding, Downhill, Trails and Skatepark. GONE CLUBBING WITH CORC AT ISAACS

Inevitably when you think of Canberran downhill your probably thinking of Mt Stromlo. Well, a week or two ago I was asked by CORC if I would like to come down and shoot a few photos and write a story on club round they would be having at a place called Isaacs. Club racing is not something I usually do, now its not because I don’t like it, infact thats far from the truth its’ because usually there is some larger form of racing going on a Sunday. Having looked at my calendar there was a 12hr on Saturday but Sunday was free. I knew it would be hard backing up a more than 12hr day with a early morning drive from Sydney to Canberra but I’m sure glad I did.Over sleeping the mark my the slightest touch, I still managed to get to Isaacs with ample time left in practice.

I’m going to put this out there, why isn’t this track in the state series? Ok, I later found out it was the usual bureaucracy gone mad but seriously this place had it all technical off camber, jumps to berm, natural features, flat corners, drops and it was steep to boot ! Of course there were B lines but that didn’t stop most guys having a go as is the essence of club racing. Whilst there were those bigger name elite guys there were plenty of junior and vets riders all out to shred. Club racing is not about hardcore racing it’s about picking up new skills, learning off others, meeting new people to ride with in your downtime and the CORC guys really seem to have that covered. There was a certain second family atmosphere to the whole race.
